UD senior Tyresa Smith invited to WNBA camp

Senior guard Tyresa Smith has been invited to the WNBA pre-draft camp.

9:25 a.m., March 22, 2007--University of Delaware senior guard Tyresa Smith is among 40 players invited to participate in a WNBA camp to be held March 29-31 in Cleveland.

The camp is being held in advance of the WNBA draft, which will take place April 4 in Cleveland. The 13 WNBA teams will select players through three draft rounds.

Smith joins 2001 graduate Cindy Johnson as the only Fightin' Blue Hens player to be invited to a WNBA camp. Johnson was not drafted.

Smith was named a finalist for the Kodak Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-America team, and was selected first team All-Colonial Athletic Association and the conference defensive player of the year.

The senior led the CAA and ranked 18th in NCAA Division I in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game. Also, Smith pulled down 7.5 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game.

The UD women's basketball team ended its season Sunday with a 69-58 loss to No. 23 Michigan State University in the opening round of the NCAA Division I championship tournament. Smith led the Hens to 26 victories this season, tying a school record, and she broke Cindy Johnson's single season scoring record with 632 points on the year.

Smith completed a tremendous career at UD as the second leading all-time scorer and the career leader in steals. She also finished fifth all-time in assists and 11th in rebounding.
