Blue Hen Weekend: Tennis, lacrosse on tap

8:24 a.m., March 30, 2007--The University of Delaware women's tennis team will serve as host to the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Weekend, with matches scheduled Friday through Sunday, March 30-April 1.

On Friday, the Fightin' Blue Hens will face the University of North Carolina Wilmington at noon and Towson University will face UNC Wilmington at 3 p.m.

On Saturday, James Madison University will face UNC Wilmington at 10 a.m. and then will face Towson at 3 p.m. On Sunday, UD will face James Madison at 9 a.m.

The Hens are back on their home courts for the first time since a swing through Florida.

The UD women's lacrosse team also will be at home, taking on Towson University in a CAA contest at noon Sunday at Rullo Stadium. The Hens are 4-3 and have won three straight games, including a 16-7 victory over Virginia Tech on Tuesday. Towson is 3-4.

In other lacrosse action, the UD men's team travels to No. 5-ranked Duke University for a game at 3 p.m., Friday. The Hens are 6-2 and ranked No. 12, and are coming off a hard-fought 6-5 victory over CAA rival Hofstra University. Duke is 6-2 and in its last game defeated Georgetown University 6-4.

The Hens feature face-off specialist Alex Smith, who has been named one of 20 candidates for the national Lowe's Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award.

UD's softball team is playing a weekend CAA series at Towson University, with games at noon, Saturday, and at 1 p.m., Sunday. The Hens are 7-12-1 following a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State University. Towson is 13-14.

Also on the road is the baseball team, which is playing a conference series at Georgia State University with games at 6 p.m., Friday, and at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The Hens are 5-13 and Georgia State is 12-14.

Blue Hen track and field teams will be in action at the Asics Winthrop Invitational Meet at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., and the Maryland Invitational at the University of Maryland College Park.
