UD grads Alrich, Barrett on USA lacrosse team

4:16 p.m., March 22, 2007--Former University of Delaware lacrosse standouts Matt Alrich and Bryan Barrett have been selected to the U.S. national indoor lacrosse team, which will compete at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in May in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Alrich was an All-Colonial Athletic Association attack who played for the Fightin' Blue Hens from 2000-04 and Barrett was an All-America East Conference defenseman who played for the Hens from 1998-01. Both are currently playing professionally for the New York Titans of the National Lacrosse League.

The two were among 33 players selected to the national team. The roster will be divided into a 23-man active roster and a 10-player reserve list shortly before the tournament. The tournament will be held May 14-20 at the Halifax Metro Centre.

The U.S. team will play Australia on May 14, Iceland on May 15 and host Canada on May 16. The tournament field also includes teams from England, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Scotland and the Iroquois Nation. Teams that advance will compete in the quarterfinals May 18, the semifinals May 19, and the finals May 20.

“After a four-month selection process, we are satisfied that the team we have assembled is both deserving of the honor, as well as committed to representing the United States in Halifax,” National Team Head Coach Tom Ryan said. “Indoor lacrosse has come a long way in the U.S. over the past decade. I am confident that this group will do everything we can to make our friends and families proud.”

Alrich, a native of Timonium, Md., led the CAA in scoring in 2004 with 34 goals and 12 assists and ranks No. 17 all-time in UD history with 83 goals and No. 26 with 103 points. He is in his first season with the New York Titans after playing the 2005 and 2006 seasons with the San Jose Stealth.

Barrett, a native of Bel Air, Md., was a three-year starter on defense for the Hens and played in 45 career games with 38 starts. He recorded 131 ground balls during his career. He is in his first season with the Titans after playing the previous five seasons with the Philadelphia Wings.

Alrich and Barrett are among six former UD players currently participating in the National Lacrosse League. Keevin Galbraith is also a member of the New York Titans, Luke Wiles plays for the San Jose Stealth, and John Grant and Scott Evans are members of the Rochester Knighthawks.
