UD women’s tennis team wins match at GWU
9:13 a.m., March 5, 2007--The University of Delaware women's tennis team picked up its second straight win Saturday afternoon as the Fightin' Blue Hens downed George Washington University 4-3. UD won three of the six singles matches and swept the doubles to claim the victory. In men's play, George Washington blanked UD 7-0. UD sophomore Amanda Campbell fell at No. 1 singles to Kendall Swenson 6-1, 7-5 and senior Liz Perlow dropped her No. 2 singles match to Madhuri Jha 7-5, 6-2. However, the Hens picked up three singles wins as Elena Berry defeated Mara Frisch 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, Alexa Dragonette defeated Tracy Stecko 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in a pivotal match at No. 4, and Brittany Barsky defeated Verena Knoedler 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 at No. 5. Rachael Honig downed freshman Kristen Mueller at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0. In doubles play, the Hens swept all three matches. Campbell and Berry teamed up to defeat Swenson and Knoedler 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, Dragonette and junior Julie Schiller defeated Jah and Frish at No. 2, and, in a battle of sisters, Barsky and Laura Honig won a thrilling match over Stecko and Rachael Honig 8-7 (7-2). The UD women's team will return to action March 23 at the Florida Institute of Technology. In men's play, George Washington's Mustafa Gencsoy defeated freshman Austin Longacre 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Sam Salyer topped sophomore Nolan Greenberg 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2. Brandon Harris posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over sophomore Matthew Liebman at No. 3, Mark Doumba defeated freshman Sam Barrer 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4, Elliot Daniels topped junior Jon Schwartz 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5, and Maxx Wattenberg downed freshman Camilo Perez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6. Daniels and Salyer defeated Greenberg and Barrer 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Harris and Ryan Hunter edged Andrew Blumberg and Longacre 8-6 at No. 2. Doumba and Gencsoy completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Perez and Jason Hanschmann at No. 3. The UD men's team will return to action Saturday, March 10, when the Hens travel to the University of Maryland for a match at noon. |
