Drexel tops Blue Hens in CAA softball series

9:32 a.m., March 26, 2007--The University of Delaware softball team defeated host Drexel University 2-1 in the opening game of a weekend Colonial Athletic Association series but dropped the next two 5-4 and 6-5.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are now 5-12-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference. They will return to action with a doubleheader at Delaware State University at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 28.

In the first game of the series against Drexel, played Saturday as the opening game of a doubleheader, the Hens won behind the arm of starting pitcher Carolynn Sloat, who allowed just five hits. Michelle Plant singled home Quinn Megargel for the winning run in the fifth inning.

In the second game Saturday, UD's Samantha Shawn took the loss. Kim Ovittore and Katie Lee hit home runs for the Hens, with Ovittore driving in three runs.

The Hens bolted to the lead in the final game of the series, played Sunday, with a five-run fifth inning. However, Drexel came back with four in the bottom of the seventh to win 6-5. Sloat took the loss. Michelle Kenney had three hits, including a double, for the Hens.
