Delaware softball team drops two to Quakers
8:16 a.m., March 15, 2007--Late inning rallies in both games lifted the host University of Pennsylvania softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Delaware on Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers won the opener 6-4 and the nightcap 5-4. With the losses, the Fightin' Blue Hens fell to 4-9. They will return to action during Delaware State University's Bash at the Beach tournament in Georgetown. UD will play games Friday, Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. In the first game against Penn, the Hens held a 4-3 lead until the Quakers stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. UD senior pitcher Carolynn Sloat went the distance and took the loss, dropping her record to 2-4. Designated hitter Allison Borchers and third baseman Michelle Plant singled to drive in runs early in the game. The Hens took a 4-2 lead into the sixth in the second game, and again Penn rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning. UD pitcher Michelle Kenney took the loss after relieving starter Samantha Shawn. Kenney and left fielder Quinn Megargel hit home runs for the Hens, and shortstop Kim Ovittore drove in a pair of runs on a triple. |
