Delaware softball team wins two in tournament

Kim Ovittore helped the Hens pick up two tournament wins.

8:36 a.m., March 12, 2007--The University of Delaware softball team won two games and lost four while competing in the Spartan Classic tournament at Norfolk, Va.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are now 4-7 to open the season. They will travel to the University of Pennsylvania for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 14.

In the tournament, the Hens defeated Marist College 4-1 and host Norfolk State University 2-0. In the victory over Marist, UD's Kim Ovittore hit a two-run double, freshman Mary Ann Magree had two hits and two runs batted in, and starting pitcher Samantha Shawn earned the win. UD pitcher Carolynn Sloat threw a shutout to defeat Norfolk State, while Ovittore and Michelle Kenney each had a pair of hits.

In other tournament games, the Hens fell 3-0 to Niagara University, 6-5 to Cornell University, 4-1 to the University of Binghamton and 9-8 to Norfolk State.
