Blue Hen softball team wins two at ECU tourney

UD’s Mary Ann Magee had four hits in her first game for the Hens.

9:22 a.m., March 5, 2007--The University of Delaware softball team opened the season by going 2-4 at the Holiday Inn Express Pirate Clash tournament at East Carolina University.

The Fightin' Blue Hens defeated the State University of New York at Binghamton 6-3 and fell 4-0 to host East Carolina in games played Friday. The next day, the Hens defeated the University of Vermont 2-1 then fell 8-3 to Fordham University.

Playing in the third-place game on Sunday, the Hens fell 6-5 to Fordham in extra innings.

Against Binghamton, UD freshman Mary Ann Magee had four hits in four trips to the plate, including a double, and drove in four runs. Barb Traynor had two hits and Kim Ovittore scored two runs. Pitcher Samantha Shawn went the distance, allowing just four hits and striking out three batters.

UD managed just three hits, by Magee, Allison Borchers and Michelle Plant, in the loss to East Carolina. Carolynn Sloat took the loss.

Sloat got the win in the victory over Vermont, in which Borchers was hit by a pitch to force home the game-winning run. UD's Shanette White had two hits and a run scored. UD jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Fordham in Saturday's game, with Katie Lee, Quinn Megargel and Borchers getting key hits. Shawn took the loss.

In Sunday's game, the Hens jumped out to a 2-0 lead but Fordham battled back for the win. White, Magee, Ovittore, Lee and Michelle Kenney had key hits while Shawn took the loss.

UD will return to action with a doubleheader at the University of Maryland Baltimore County at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 7.
