Tyresa Smith is CAA’s defensive player of year
11:22 a.m., March 8, 2007--University of Delaware senior guard Tyresa Smith was named the Colonial Athletic Association's defensive player of the year and also was named first team All-CAA, it was announced Wednesday night during the conference awards banquet held at UD's Clayton Hall. Also for the Fightin' Blue Hens, senior forward Chrissy Fisher was named third team All-CAA, junior guard Kyle DeHaven joined Smith on the CAA All-Defensive team, and guards Alena Koshansky and Jamie Mundy were named honorable mention CAA All-Academic. Delaware (25-4) is the No. 3 seed in the CAA championship tournament being held at the Bob Carpenter Center, and the Hens will take on the winner of game between Virginia Commonwealth University and Northeastern University in a quarterfinal contest to be played at 5 p.m., Friday, March 9. The tournament continues through Sunday with the champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Smith was joined on the first team by CAA player of the year Meredith Alexis of James Madison University and by T.J. Jordan of Old Dominion University, Kyra Kaylor of the College of William & Mary, and Tamera Young of James Madison. Smith, who broke the UD record for points in a season with 575, averaged 19.7 points a game, which was first in the CAA and 18th in NCAA Division I. The All-America candidate also had 7.7 rebounds per game and tallied 70 assists and 72 steals. Smith also was named defensive player of the year and first team All-CAA last season. Joining Fisher on the third team was Andrea Benvenuto of James Madison, Lori Drake of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Shaleyse Smallwood of Northeastern, and CAA rookie of the year Gabriela Marginean of Drexel University. Fisher was second on the team in both scoring, with 13.4 points per game, and rebounding, with 7.5 boards a game. The senior also led the team with 35 three-point field goals. Kenny Brooks of James Madison was named the CAA coach of the year and Lesley Dickinson of James Madison was honored with the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award. |
