UD women’s basketball to face JMU in semis

12:10 a.m., March 10, 2007--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team, fueled by a boisterous crowd at the Bob Carpenter Center, defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 79-58 to advance to the semifinal round of the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will face James Madison University at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 10. James Madison advanced by defeating the University of North Carolina 73-43.

In the other semifinal game, to begin at noon, top seed Old Dominion University will face Hofstra University. On Friday, Old Dominion staved off a late challenge by Drexel University to win 66-55, and Hofstra defeated the College of William and Mary 71-46.

In the victory over Virginia Commonwealth, the Hens got 22 points from senior guard Tyresa Smith, 12 points from junior forward Courtney Irving and 11 each from Kyle DeHaven and Chrissy Fisher.

With the win, the Hens tied a school record for most victories in a season with 26. They have won six straight games and 16 straight games at the Bob Carpenter Center, which for the first time is site of the CAA championship tournament.

“I thought we set the tone defensively and did what we needed to do in controlling the ball,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “I was pleased with our effort and we are happy to move on. Our kids have a lot of pride; this is our home floor. The whole front line took it personally and went out and got rebounds.”

The CAA championship game will be played at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 11.

UD student tickets are $6 per student per session. A session includes admission to all games played that day. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the box office in the Trabant University Center or the Bob Carpenter Center. Tickets also will be available at the Bob Carpenter Center on game days.

UD students are encouraged to wear their Cockpit T-shirts and yellow spirit wigs to Hen games.

For the general public, tickets can be purchased through the box offices of CAA member institutions, by calling the University of Delaware box office at (302) 831-2257, or by logging on to [www.ticketmaster.com]. Tickets cost $35 per book, which includes all 11 games. Cost per session is $13 for adults.

Comcast CN8 and other CAA television affiliates will televise both semifinal games on Saturday. Comcast SportsNet will televise the CAA championship game on Sunday afternoon.
