Delaware rowing team competes on Schuylkill

8:08 a.m., March 12, 2007--The University of Delaware women's rowing team opened the spring season by competing in a quad meet Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

The best finish by the Fightin' Blue Hens was in the second varsity eights, won by host St. Joseph's University in a time of 7:07.7. The UD boat of coxswain Cami Off, Katie Broullire, Lana Rivers, Jenn Boutin, Rachel Thomas, Maria Bellumori, Nicolette Lotrionte, Katie Gooding and Lynn Hamski finished second in 7:23.0. Lehigh University finished third.

Lehigh won the novice eights in 7:36.8, while St. Joseph's was second in 7:49.3. The UD boat of coxswain Avery Griffin, Mary Grace Maggiano, Liz Cretekos, Laura Anglim, Jess Brooks, Regine Adrien, Brittany Hayes, Katy Johnson and Maureen Reardon finished third in 7:55.6

St. Joseph's took the varsity fours in 8:36.8, ahead of Drexel University in 8:47.1 and Lehigh in 9:01.3. The UD boat of coxswain Amanda Burton, Emily Canniff, Kristen Cannatelli, Catherine Hansen and Lynn Hamski finished fourth in 9:11.6.

St. Joseph's also won the varsity eights in 7:13.6, followed by Lehigh in 7:29.5 and Drexel in 7:32.2. The UD boat of coxswain Kenna Plangemann, Laura Beaufort, Lisa Ferrara, Elizabeth Carey, Christina Stanley, Justine Strausser, Melanie Turner, Lisa Medina and Nikki Jackowsky finished fourth in 7:33.2.

“It was a good day of racing in our first exhibition of the spring season,” UD Head Coach Laura Slice said. “We showed good power. There are things we need to work on, but I was pleased with today's results.”

The Hens return to action on Saturday, March 24, when they compete in the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia.
