Georgetown tops Hens 9-8 in men’s lacrosse

UD’s Alex Smith has set a new NCAA Division I face-off record.

8:42 a.m., March 15, 2007--The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team led late but ultimately fell 9-8 to No. 7 Georgetown University in a game played Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division I, suffered their second straight loss and fell to 5-2. The Hens will return to action with a Colonial Athletic Association game against Hofstra University at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 24, at Rullo Stadium.

UD fell behind early in the showdown with Georgetown but rallied in the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7 and led 8-7 early in the fourth before the Hoyas scored the game's final two goals to earn the victory.

UD senior attack Adam Zuder-Havens scored three goals and freshman midfielder D.J. Widlake scored two to lead the Hens. Also finding the net were Sean Calabrese, Kyle Rotelli and Dan Deckelbaum. Cam Howard had a pair of assists and Jordan Hall had an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 21 games. Goalkeeper Tommy Scherr had 12 saves.

UD senior midfielder Alex Smith became the all-time NCAA Division I leader in face-off wins as he took 14 of 19 draws and increased his career total to 846, breaking the previous school and NCAA record of 838 by Steve Shaw in 1983-86. Shaw attended the game and helped honor Smith several minutes after the record was broken in the third quarter. A two-time All-America, Smith has now won 81.2 percent of his 160 face-offs this season.
