UD’s Meissner fourth after short program

8:29 a.m., March 23, 2007--Kimmie Meissner of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club will take to the ice to defend her International Skating Union world championship this weekend in Tokyo, Japan.

Meissner has had a strong season, winning the U.S. national title and the international Four Continents competition in advance of the world championships.

She was in fourth place after Friday's short program. Kim Yu-na of South Korea held the lead, followed by Miki Ando of Japan and Carolina Kostner of Italy, the European champion, in third. Meissner held the fourth spot, and was followed by Japan's Mao Asada.

The long program will be skated on Saturday, March 24. The competition is being broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2.

Also at worlds, the Bulgarian ice dance team of Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski, who train at UD, won their second straight world title.
