Cross country teams win academic honors

UD’s Laura Heenan had a 4.0 grade point average for the fall semester, leading the women’s cross country team.

11:20 a.m., March 8, 2007--The University of Delaware men's and women's cross country teams have been honored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their academic success during the 2006 season.

The UD men's team was among 86 NCAA Division I teams and the women's team was among 145 teams that posted cumulative team grade point averages of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester.

Led by Head Coach Jim Fischer, the men's team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.04 for the fall semester with nine of the 17 runners posting averages of 3.0 or higher and five posting averages of 3.5 or higher. Alex Gambogi had the team's best average, at 3.738.

The women's team, led by Head Coach Sue McGrath-Powell, had a cumulative average of 3.307. Twenty of the team's 25 members were at or above 3.0 and seven were at or above 3.5. Laura Heenan had the highest grade point average, a perfect 4.0.
