CAA tourney webcast available to UD fans

11:53 a.m., March 1, 2007--University of Delaware men's basketball fans can watch the Fightin' Blue Hens' opening Colonial Athletic Association tournament game against Northeastern University live via a free webcast being offered by the conference at [www.caasports.com]. The conference also is offering a live stats feature for fans who go online.

The Hens enter the tournament as the 12th seed and will face fifth seed Northeastern at 2:30 p.m., Friday, March 2, in opening round action at the Richmond (Va.) Coliseum. UD went 5-25 during the regular season and finished 12th in the league standings with a 3-15 conference mark. Northeastern finished 12-18 overall and tied for fifth with a 9-9 CAA record.

Northeastern won both games against the Hens this season, posting a 73-64 victory on Jan. 27 in Boston and a 70-61 triumph last Wednesday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Junior forward Herb Courtney will lead the Hens into tournament action, scoring 17.9 points and snaring 8.1 rebounds per game. Freshman point guard Brian Johnson, who is averaging 9.4 points per game, is the reigning CAA co-rookie of the week after scoring 17 points against Northeastern and a career high 26 against UNC Wilmington.

“We are looking at is as a new season,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross, who is in his first season with the Hens, said. “It is an opportunity to rectify any shortcomings you might have had during the season. Nobody starts a game down 12-0 because of finishing last in the league; everything is 0-0 and you have an opportunity. We will try to put our best foot forward just like we have tried to do all year and see where the chips fall.”

Other first round games on Friday feature No. 8 seed the College of William & Mary facing No. 9 seed Georgia State University at noon, No. 7 seed Towson University taking on No. 10 seed University of North Carolina Wilmington at 6 p.m., and No. 6 seed George Mason University facing No. 11 seed James Madison University at 8:30 p.m.

The winner of the UD-Northeastern game will face fourth seed Drexel University at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 3, in the quarterfinal round. Also, top seed Virginia Commonwealth University will face the winner of the William & Mary-Georgia State game at noon, second seed Old Dominion University will face the winner of the Towson-UNC Wilmington game at 6 p.m., and third seed Hofstra University will take on the winner of the George Mason-James Madison game at 8:30 p.m.

The tournament semifinals will be held at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Sunday, March 4, with the final at 7 p.m., Monday, March 5. The four Saturday quarterfinal contests and both semifinal games on Sunday will be televised and webcast by Comcast CN8 [www.cn8.tv]. The championship game will be televised by ESPN.
