Hens men’s basketball falls in CAA tournament

UD’s Sam McMahon had 17 points in the loss to Northeastern.

4:37 p.m., March 2, 2007--The University of Delaware men's basketball team was knocked out of the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament, falling 77-67 to Northeastern University in a game played Friday afternoon at the Richmond (Va.) Coliseum.

The Fightin' Blue Hens opened with a 10-2 lead but Northeastern took a 35-22 lead into the half and scored the first six points of the second half to take control of the game.

The outmanned Fightin' Blue Hens drew to within 54-43 on a dunk by junior forward Herb Courtney, a second team All-CAA selection, before Northeastern extended its lead to double figures once again. UD drew to within single digits several times later in the second half but ultimately was unable to seriously threaten the Huskies.

The Hens, with just seven players on the roster, had two foul out late in the game, leaving them just five to finish the contest.

Courtney was UD's leading scorer with 24 points. Junior Sam McMahon had 17points and seven rebounds, and freshman point guard Brian Johnson had 14 points. Deon Goodman, a manager on last season's team who was the seventh man, scored two points in the final minute.

The Fightin' Blue Hens finished 5-26 in their first season under Head Coach Monté Ross.
