Blue Hen Weekend: Hens at East Lansing

Tyresa Smith and the UD women’s basketball team will take on Michigan State in the NCAA Division I championship tournament opening round at 7 p.m., Sunday, March 18.

8:30 a.m., March 16, 2007--The major event in University of Delaware athletics this weekend is the NCAA Division I championship tournament appearance by the Fightin' Blue Hens women's basketball team. The Hens will take on Michigan State University at 7 p.m., Sunday, March 18, in East Lansing, Mich.

UD, led by Head Coach Tina Martin, is one of a record three Colonial Athletic Association teams in the women's tournament. Old Dominion University won the automatic berth as conference champion and both James Madison University and Delaware received at-large bids.

The Hens enter the game at 26-5, tied for the most wins in UD history, and are the No. 12 seed. Michigan State, the No. 5 seed, is 23-8.

UD features three seniors in guards Tyresa Smith, the CAA defensive player of the year, and Alena Koshansky, and forward Chrissy Fisher. Smith finished first in the conference and 18th in NCAA Division I in scoring, with 19.8 points per game, and Koshansky was second in the nation with a 3.0 assist to turnover ratio.

This is the fifth consecutive NCAA bid for Michigan State, which features four players averaging in double figures. They are senior guard Victoria Lucas-Perry (13.5), 6-foot 9-inch freshman center Allyssa DeHaan (12.6), sophomore forward Aisha Jefferson (10.3) and senior guard Rene Haynes (10.3).

Tournament games are being carried on ESPN2 and local coverage will be provided by WWTX-AM 1290 The Ticket, WDOV-AM 1410 and WVUD-FM 91.3.

Also, tournament games are being shown at the Hen Zone, on the lower level of the Perkins Student Center.

Playing at home this weekend will be the UD baseball team, which will take on Sacred Heart University on Saturday and Sunday, March 17-18, at Bob Hannah Stadium, weather permitting. A single game Saturday is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.

The Hens are 2-9 but coming off a 15-6 victory over Wilmington College. Sacred Heart is 4-8, with one of its wins coming against the University of Notre Dame. Senior pitcher Jay Monti, who threw a two-hit shutout against the Fighting Irish, is the Northeast Conference pitcher of the week.

On the road, the UD softball team is competing in the Bash at the Beach, hosted by Delaware State University in Georgetown. The opening day of the tournament, Saturday, has been cancelled because of inclement weather. Play will begin on Sunday.

The tournament will be held at the Sports at the Beach Complex on Route 9, east of the city.

The UD golf team is competing in the Fairfield Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday at Heather's Run Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
