Blue Hen Weekend: Men’s lacrosse Saturday

Adam Zuder Havens and the Fightin’ Blue Hens will take on Rutgers at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Rullo Stadium.

8:46 a.m., March 2, 2007--There will be plenty of action for University of Delaware teams this weekend but only one contest on campus, that featuring the nationally ranked Fightin' Blue Hens men's lacrosse team in a nonconference game against Rutgers University at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 3, at Rullo Stadium.

The Hens are 3-0 and ranked as high as No. 14 in the latest Nike/Inside Lacrosse NCAA Division I poll. They are coming off a 20-5 victory over Manhattan College and have won 11 straight games at Rullo Stadium.

Rutgers is 1-0 with a 17-9 victory over Dowling College in their season opener on Tuesday.

In other weekend action, the UD women's lacrosse team is playing at Rutgers at 1 p.m., Saturday, the baseball team is playing a weekend series at the University of Virginia and the softball team is competing in a tournament at East Carolina University. Also, several members of the track and field team will be competing in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes in America (IC4A) indoor championships in Boston.

The UD women's lacrosse team is 0-1 after a season opening 15-10 loss to No. 14-ranked Penn State University last week. However, freshman attack Nicole Flego scored three goals and added two assists to be named the Colonial Athletic Association rookie of the week.

The baseball team is 0-3 after being swept in a weekend series at the University of Richmond. They will be playing the nationally ranked Cavaliers in a series in Charlottesville, Va., with games scheduled at 4 p.m., Friday, and at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

The UD softball team will open its season at the Holiday Inn Express Pirate Clash hosted by East Carolina University. The Hens will play two games Friday, facing Binghamton University at noon and host East Carolina at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, UD will face the University of Vermont at 10 a.m. and Fordham University at 2 p.m. They will play one game on Sunday at a time to be determined.

Senior pitcher Carolynn Sloat, who earned second team All-Mid Atlantic Region honors last season after going 19-16 with a 1.85 earned run average, leads the Hens. Junior second baseman Allison Borchers earned first team All-CAA and all-region honors in 2006, with a .382 batting average, 73 hits, 36 runs scored, seven triples and 105 total bases.

Ten track and field competitors will be in action in Boston. On Friday, Michelle Gomes will compete in the 60- and 200-meter dashes, Asha Quant in the long jump, Rachel Young in the shot put, and Cristine Marquez in 400-meter dash. Gomes and Marquez will be joined by Alexi Capsouras, Daniella Price and Brittany Wright.

On Saturday, Kelli McDonald will compete in the pole vault and Gregg Cantwell in the 3,000-meter run. Jared Wasser will compete in the shot put on Sunday.
