Hofstra takes weekend CAA baseball series

9:21 a.m., March 26, 2007--Hofstra University pounded the University of Delaware 16-8 on Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium to win two of three in a Colonial Athletic Association weekend series.

The Fightin' Blue Hens won the opener on Friday 8-4, then fell 5-4 on Saturday and 16-8 in the getaway game.

UD is now 4-12 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Hens will return to action with a game against Tempe University in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic to be played at 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 27, at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Hens will remain at home to face Delaware State University at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 28.

In Friday's victory over Hofstra, the Hens scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, with Alex Buchholz ripping a two-run triple, to secure the win. Buchholz finished with three hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored. UD pitcher Billy Harris (1-1) earned the win.

On Saturday, UD pitchers scattered seven hits but Hofstra turned them into five runs for the win. UD's Dan Richardson had three hits in the game, and Brandon Menchaca and Bill Merkler hit home runs. Chad Kerfoot (0-2) took the loss.

Hofstra had the hot bats on Sunday, knocking out 17 hits and scoring nearly as many runs. Adam Tsakonas and Scott Shockley had three hits each for the Hens, and Ryan Jablonski had a home run. Matt Heppner (0-3) took the loss.
