Late rally falls short for Blue Hen baseball team

UD’s Dan Richardson had two hits in the loss to Temple.

8:20 a.m., March 21, 2007--A ninth inning rally by the University of Delaware baseball team fell just short in a 5-4 loss to Temple University on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium, with the tying run stranded at third base.

With the loss, the Fightin' Blue Hens fell to 2-10. They will return to action with a home game against St. Joseph's University at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 21.

UD will remain at home for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series against Hofstra University. Games are scheduled at 3 p.m., Friday, March 23, and at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25.

In Tuesday's loss, the Hens trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Adam Tsakonas and Dan-Richardson started off the inning with consecutive singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Davis. After Ryan Jablonski's walk loaded the bases, Brandon Menchaca grounded out with Taskonas scoring.

Alex Buchholz followed with a single to right that brought in Richardson and Jablonski, and a single by Bryan Hagerich moved Buchholz to third. Bill Merkler then reached on an error that brought home Buchholz and moved Hagerich to third.

With the score now 5-4, Temple pitcher Matt Blackburn got pinch hitter Ryan Engelhardt to ground out, ending the rally and the game.

UD starter Brad Miller (1-2) took the loss. Richardson and Hagerich had two hits each.
