Virginia sweeps Hens in weekend baseball

UD freshman Brad Miller worked four scoreless innings in his debut.

9:19 a.m., March 5, 2007--The University of Delaware baseball team has gotten a chilly reception in Virginia. The University of Richmond swept the Fightin' Blue Hens in a three-game series to open the season and the nationally ranked University of Virginia did likewise this weekend.

The Fightin' Blue Hens (0-6) were scheduled to return to action at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, against Rider University, but that game has been postponed because of an expected winter storm. UD will play its first Colonial Athletic Association series of the season, facing Towson University March 9-11 at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Against No. 7 Virginia, the Hens fell 11-2 on Friday, 10-4 on Saturday and 3-2 on Sunday.

UD second baseman Alex Buchholz had two of the Hens' seven hits in the opener. Pitcher Billy Harris took the loss, giving up eight hits and eight runs in three innings of work. Brad Miller worked four scoreless innings in relief in his college debut.

Buchholz, Brandon Menchaca, Ryan Cuneo and Scott Shockley had two hits each in the game Saturday. Buchholz drove in a pair of runs, and Menchaca hit a pair of triples. Pitcher Matt Heppner got the loss, giving up nine runs in three innings.

In the finale, Buchholz and Bryan Hagerich hit doubles and Menchaca hit a triple, driving in both runs for the Hens. Pitcher Todd Ozog took the loss.
