Hens men’s basketball falls in BracketBusters

UD’s Herb Courtney had 17 points and 15 rebounds in the loss to Iona.

9:04 a.m., Feb. 19, 2007--The University of Delaware men's basketball team fell 52-50 to Iona College in an ESPNU BracketBusters Tournament game played Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

It was just the second win of the season for Iona, while the Fightin' Blue Hens fell to 5-23, a new record for losses in a season. The Hens will remain at home to face Northeastern University in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at 7 p.m., Wednesday, then will finish the regular season on the road at the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 2 p.m., Saturday.

The CAA championship tournament will be played March 2-5 at the Richmond Coliseum.

In Saturday's loss, the Hens held a 43-41 lead with 3:21 to play but Iona scored five straight points and sealed the win with six consecutive free throws down the stretch.

“A lot of our warts showed up tonight,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “We seem to be making the same mistakes we made earlier in the season. In the end, committing turnovers and giving up offensive rebounds came back to bite us.”

UD had three players in double figures. Junior forward Herb Courtney had 17 points and 15 rebounds, freshman point guard Brian Johnson had 14 points and junior Sam McMahon had 10 points.
