Delaware volleyball clinches playoff berth

10:45 a.m., Nov. 8, 2004--The University of Delaware volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches and secured a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament with a 3-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday night at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

Head Coach Bonnie Kenny’s Fightin’ Blue Hens won 30-26, 30-13 and 30-25 to improve to 22-6 overall and 9-3 in the conference.

Fittingly on Senior Night, the Hens were led by seniors Sarah Engle, who had 11 kills and 15 digs; Taylor Govaars, who had 21 digs; Nicole Stuka, who had nine kills and 11 digs; and Valerie Murphy, who had 11 kills.

UD junior Niecy Taylor hit .526 with 12 kills and only two errors in 19 attacks. Freshman Colleen Walsh had 14 kills, and freshman Allison Lutz had 32 assists.

On Friday night, host UD defeated another CAA rival, James Madison University, 3-0. The Hens won 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27.

Taylor hit .611, with 13 kills and a team-high four blocks. Murphy also had 13 kills, while Engle had 12 kills and 10 digs.

Lutz had 44 assists, five digs and three blocks, and Walsh had 11 kills and three blocks. Govaars had nine digs.

The Hens will travel to Towson University for an important CAA match at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12. Towson is 20-7 overall and leads the conference with a record of 11-1.

The four-team CAA championship tournament will be held Nov. 19-20 at the home court of the highest seed.
