UD field hockey team tops James Madison, VCU

10:20 a.m., Oct. 4, 2004--The University of Delaware field hockey team, ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division I, earned two Colonial Athletic Association road victories over the weekend. The Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated James Madison University 2-1 in double overtime on Friday in Harrisonburg, Va., and Virginia Commonwealth University 4-0 on Sunday in Richmond.

Against Virginia Commonwealth, Amanda Warrington and Amber Deimler scored two goals each to lead the Hens.

Warrington scored unassisted at 27:51 of the first half to give UD the lead, and then Deimler scored at 33:50 off an assist from Lauren Carr to make it 2-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, Warrington scored her second unassisted goal at 51:38 and also assisted on Deimler’s second goal at 60:53.

UD’s Erica LaBar had two defensive saves, and goalkeeper Megan Allen stopped six shots.

Warrington also scored to give the Hens an early lead in the game against James Madison. The Dukes responded with a goal by Lindzi Hoffman to tie the game and send it into overtime.

In the second overtime period, UD All-American Jessi Balmer scored the game-winner at 9:08 off an assist by Katie Evans.

Allen had seven saves for the Hens.

UD, which improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the CAA, returns home to face the College of William and Mary at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, at Rullo Field.
