Warrington is selected CAA’s top defender

UD’s Amanda Warrington has been named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year.
2:46 p.m., Nov. 9, 2004--University of Delaware sophomore field hockey standout Amanda Warrington has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year, and she was one of six Fightin’ Blue Hens named to All-CAA teams.

UD players named first team All-CAA were Warrington, a midfielder, sophomore goalkeeper Megan Allen and senior back Erica Labar.

Players named second team All-CAA were senior backs Jessi Balmer and Leah Geib.

Freshman Molly Burke was named to the CAA All-Rookie team.

The Hens won the 2004 CAA championship, defeating Hofstra University 5-1 for the title, and will advance to the NCAA Division I championship tournament.

Warrington had a stellar season, with nine goals and three game-winning goals. She was named the most valuable player in the CAA tournament.

LaBar also scored nine goals, three of which were game winners, and had a goal and an assist in the CAA tournament. She is a two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Region selection and was a third team All-American in 2002. She is one of three captains on this year’s squad and will participate in the North-South Senior All-Star Game to be held at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Allen led the CAA in shutouts with nine and allowed just 23 goals during the regular season. She had 94 saves and a save percentage of .805. Allen allowed just two goals during the conference championship tournament.

Balmer scored six goals and had one assist for 13 points. She is one of three captains on the squad and was named a third team All-American in 2003. She was named to the CAA All-Tournament team after scoring one goal and adding one assist.

Geib scored six goals and had seven assists this season. The tri-captain was named to the CAA All-Tournament team and will join LaBar in the North-South Senior All-Star Game.

Burke had one assist this season and was a starter in the UD midfield throughout the regular season. She also started in the CAA tournament semifinal game against Old Dominion.
