Haugabrook selected top senior male athlete

3:26 p.m., May 18, 2005--Sidney Haugabrook, one of the premiere defensive backs in the history of University of Delaware football, has been named the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete for 2004-05.

Haugabrook, who started every game of his career and led the Fightin’ Blue Hens football team to the 2003 NCAA Division I-AA national championship, was honored during the annual UD Men’s Intercollegiate Athletics Awards luncheon, held May 17 at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The Outstanding Senior Male Athlete is selected by a vote of the head coaches of UD’s 11 men's intercollegiate sports. Haugabrook is the fourth consecutive UD football player to win the award, following quarterback Andy Hall in 2004, linebacker Dan Mulhern in 2003 and wide receiver Jamin Elliott in 2002.

Haugabrook, a senior consumer economics major from Atlanta, was a four-year starter at cornerback and a standout kick returner who more than once electrified Delaware Stadium crowds with key plays. The 2004 co-captain is just the second UD player in history to earn all-conference honors all four years.

Haugabrook was a consensus All-American in 2004, when he was selected to the first team by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the American Football Coaches and to the second team by the Associated Press and The Sports Network. He played in prestigious East West Shrine Game in San Francisco.

Haugabrook, who also was named the UD Alumni Association most valuable player in football, recently signed a free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League.

In addition to Haugabrook, the following UD scholar-athletes were honored as the outstanding performers on their teams as voted by their teammates:

Baseball

Junior catcher Brian Valichka earned the Papp Lukk Award as the UD Alumni Association most valuable player. A three-year starter behind the plate for the Hens, Valichka helped lead the team to a record of 24-27 and a second straight berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament. He is a nominee for the Johnny Bench Award as the top collegiate catcher in the nation, and is an honor student as a sport management major.

Basketball

Junior forward Harding Nana won the Col. C.B. Shaffer Award as the team's most valuable player. Nana was one of the most dominating players in the CAA in 2004-05, leading the conference in scoring (18.5 points per game) and rebounding (10.4 rebounds per game). He was one of just six players in NCAA Division I to lead a conference in scoring and rebounding, and his 19 double-doubles, games in which he scored 10 or more points and grabbed 10 or more rebounds, ranked fifth in the nation. He is a leadership major.

Cross country

Sophomore P.J. Meany won the UD Alumni Association most valuable runner award. He led all UD competitors in six of the seven meets in 2004 and finished 23rd to help lead the Hens to a fourth-place finish at the CAA championship meet. He won individual titles at the Towson Invitational and the Delaware Invitational and finished 60th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet. The business major also finished sixth in the 5,000-meters run in the CAA outdoor track and field championship meet.

Golf

Sophomore Joe McLister won the John J. DeLuca/Scotty Duncan UD Alumni Association Award for the second straight year. A team captain, McLister recorded a team-best stroke average 76.58 and was the top finisher in seven tournaments. He carded a season-best 69 in capturing the Goldey-Beacom College Spring Invitational and finished 23rd at the CAA championship tournament when he led the Hens to an eighth-place finish. He is a business major.

Indoor track and field

Sophomore middle distance runner Brad Dodson won the UD Alumni Association Award. Dodson finished first in five meets in distances ranging from the 1,000 meters to the 3,000 meters. He set a UD record, running the 1,000 meters in 2:28.44, and ran a leg in a record-setting distance medley relay. He finished 12th in the 1,500-meter run at the CAA outdoor track and field championships.

Lacrosse

Senior goalkeeper Chris Collins won the UD Alumni Association Award. A three-year team captain, Collins led nationally ranked UD to one of its finest seasons as the Hens went 11-6, won the CAA regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament for just the third time in history. A two-time second team All-CAA selection, Collins ranked among the national leaders with a 7.56 goals against average and a .584 save percentage. He has 542 career saves, which is fourth all-time at UD. Collins is a physical education major.

Outdoor track and field

Senior weight thrower Mike Yost won the Fred J. Harmer UD Alumni Association Award. A four-year letter winner in both indoor and outdoor track and field, Yost enjoyed an outstanding spring, winning eight titles in the hammer and discus. He won the discus at the CAA championship meet and earned a spot in the NCAA East regional meet. He a wildlife conservation major.

Soccer

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Haynes won the UD Alumni Association Award. A four-year starter, Haynes started 72 of a possible 73 games during his career and set UD records for minutes played by a goalkeeper in a season and career. He was a two-year co-captain and finished his career third all-time at UD with 351 saves and fourth all-time with 13 shutouts. During the course of his career, he allowed just 1.65 goals per game and had a save percentage of .739, An honor student as a political science and history major, Haynes twice was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional All-Academic team. He also received the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Medal of Merit Award as a standout male letter winner with a high grade point average (3.715).

Swimming and diving

Junior Levan Beridze earned the Jack and Hugh Dougherty UD Alumni Association Award. Beridze had five top 10 finishes at the CAA championships, including UD’s first individual top five finish since the Hens joined the conference. He finished fourth in the 100 freestyle, seventh in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay and 10th in the 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. His time of 46.02 in the 100 freestyle is the second fastest in UD history, and his time of 21.18 in the 50 freestyle ranks is fourth fastest. He is an international relations major with a minor in Russian.

Tennis

Freshman Jason Hanschmann won the Alexander J. Taylor UD Alumni Association Award. Hanschmann helped lead UD to a dual match record of 12-7 and a berth in the CAA quarterfinals and recorded the team’s best record in singles and doubles. Hanschmann went 18-7 in singles, setting a UD record for singles wins in a season, and 17-5 in doubles, where he teamed with Jesse Carl. He is an electrical engineering major.

A number of other UD scholar-athletes received special recognition during the luncheon.

Winners of the Miles Powell Jr. Engineering/Athletics Scholarships were juniors Mike Manlove and Charlie Dielmann of the cross country and track and field teams, junior Michael Rasch of the swimming and diving team, senior Dan Spiker of the golf team and sophomore Kyle Schmid of the track and field team. The awards are presented to letter winners who are also top engineering majors.

Junior tennis player Adam Liebman was presented the Lee J. Hynick Award as the junior letter winner on the tennis team with the highest grade point average, and freshman Daniel Abbott earned the Thomas Baranello Award as the most improved swimmer. Sophomore Brendan Spencer won the Chuck Ganci Award for special contributions to the swimming and diving team.

Junior Kevin DuPrey received the Sharp Academic Award, and sophomore Andrew Lynch received the D. Kenneth Steers Award, both for outstanding academic success with the track and field team.

Senior Mondoe Davis of the football team won the Dr. Janice Jordan Award presented by UD Student Services for Athletes to a scholar-athlete who has made outstanding progress academically. Davis graduated in just over three years and is a UD graduate student in public policy.

Senior Nick Riordan of the track and field team received the Outstanding Contributor Award presented by UD Student Services for Athletes. Riordan was honored for his involvement with community service projects and as a member of the UD Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
