O’Brien, Meany capture Seahawk Classic titles

11:29 a.m., Sept. 12, 2005--The University of Delaware cross country teams opened the season with strong finishes at the Seahawk Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Friday, with the Fightin’ Blue Hens women’s team winning and the men’s team finishing second.

Individually, UD sophomore Colleen O’Brien won the women’s five-kilometer race in 18:02.46, and sophomore P.J. Meany won the men’s six-kilometer race in 18:48.86.

The UD women posted a team score of 65 for the victory, its first since winning the Delaware Invitational in 2001. East Carolina University was second with 70 points, followed by Georgia State University (72), UNC Wilmington (75), Elon University (77), Winston-Salem State University (176) and Mt. Olive College (205).

Georgia State won the men’s team title with 27 points, followed by UD (45), Elon (92), UNC Wilmington (93), East Carolina (95), Winston-Salem State (191) and Mt. Olive (207).

O’Brien won her first career individual title, covering the course in 18:02.46 and beating runner-up Marissa Murtaugh of UNC Wilmington by more than 12 seconds. UD placed three runners in the top 20 as freshman Julia Somers finished sixth in 19:01.58 and junior Sari Weissbard finished 11th (19:23.69).

Meany captured his third career individual title as he covered the course in 18:48.86, 19 seconds faster than runner-up Yib Arega of Georgia State. The Hens placed seven runners in the top 20 as freshman Gregg Cantwell finished fifth (19:31.37), Kyle Schmid 12th (19:43.01), Tyler Mayforth 13th (19:49.56), Mike Ward 14th (19:49.98), Tim Brock 19th (20:17.34) and Mike Hazeltine 20th (20:17.54).
