UD women’s soccer secures CAA berth

Alli D’Amico
11:50 a.m., Oct. 28, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s soccer team secured a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament with a 2-0 victory over the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Thursday night at chilly Delaware Mini-Stadium.

With the victory, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 9-5-3 and 6-3-1 in the CAA. The Hens will close out the regular season at home against Georgia State University at 1 p.m., Saturday, and the team’s nine seniors will be honored prior to the start of the match.

The CAA tournament quarterfinals will be played Tuesday, Nov. 1, on the home field of the higher seeds. UD, which holds third place in the conference, could host a first round game depending on the outcome of this weekend’s matches. The championship will be decided Nov. 4-6 at a site to be determined.

Against UNC Wilmington, the Hens took the lead just 10:14 into the game when sophomore forward Alli D’Amico scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The shot came from 14 yards and deflected off the left post before finding the back of the net.

The Hens added an insurance tally with just over 10 minutes remaining when freshman forward Caitlyn Germain broke in on UNC Wilmington goalkeeper Rachael Wilson, who saw the ball bounce and roll into the net after an initial stop.

UD senior keeper Lindsey Shover continued her stellar play, making five saves and recording her second shutout in the last three games and her sixth of the season. She now has 20 career shutouts, tying Sheena Hunter for second place in school history.
