UD women’s soccer team wins, ties in CAA action

Emily Sammis
1:35 p.m., Oct. 24, 2005--Goals by sophomores Emily Sammis and Alli D’Amico lifted the University of Delaware women’s soccer team to a win and a tie in Colonial Athletic Association matches this weekend.

Sammis scored with just 1:24 remaining to give the Fightin’ Blue Hens a 1-0 victory over host George Mason University on Friday night in Fairfax and D’Amico scored 12 minutes into the second half as UD battled host Towson University to a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon.

In the victory over George Mason, the Hens shook off a slow start and Sammis found the net off a corner kick by Mary Beth Creed. Prior to the goal, UD’s best chance came in the 75th minute when Shannon Alger’s shot from inside the box was stopped by George Mason goalkeeper Kasey Davenport.

UD senior goalkeeper Lindsey Shover had eight saves in posting the fifth shutout of the season and 19th of her career, which is second in school history to the 20 recorded by Sheena Hunter.

Shover had a season-high 10 saves in the tie with Towson.

D’Amico scored her third goal of the season off a cross from Caitlyn Germain.

Following weekend play, UD stands third in the CAA with a record of 8-5-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the conference. The Hens will resume conference play with a home match against the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. The Seahawks are 7-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the conference.

The Hens will conclude regular season play with a CAA match at home against new conference member Georgia State University at 1 p.m., Saturday. Georgia State is 8-10 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
