UD women’s soccer team splits weekend matches

Jennifer Krepps
11:08 a.m., Oct. 17, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s soccer team splits its weekend Colonial Athletic Association matches, falling 1-0 to Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday and defeating James Madison University 1-0 on Sunday. Both matches were played at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens are now 7-5-2 overall and 4-3 in the CAA. They will return to action with a pair of conference road games this weekend, traveling to George Mason University on Friday and to Towson University on Sunday.

In the loss to conference-leading Virginia Commonwealth, UD gave up the lone goal midway through the first half but nearly tied the game shortly thereafter when senior Shannon Alger redirected a corner kick just over the crossbar.

In the second half, UD freshman Caitlyn Germain had two chances to tie the game but each time her shots were turned away by Virginia Commonwealth goalkeeper Lauren Hardison.

Hardison had four saves, including one on UD senior midfielder Melissa Kunisky with just 45 seconds remaining in the game.

UD goalkeeper Lindsay Shover had two saves.

In the victory over James Madison, UD senior Jennifer Krepps scored her first goal of the season 2:14 into the second half on a penalty kick. The kick was set up when sophomore forward Alli D’Amico was taken down in the right side of the goal box. Krepps then blasted a shot low and inside the right post, beating James Madison goalkeeper Jessica Hussey.

Shover had six saves for the Hens, including one with less than 10 seconds remaining to preserve the victory.
