UD women’s soccer defeats Old Dominion

10:50 a.m., Oct. 10, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s soccer team scored three second-half goals to upset Colonial Athletic Association leader Old Dominion University 3-2 on Friday night in Norfolk, Va.

Old Dominion took a 1-0 halftime lead but the Fightin’ Blue Hens tied the game less than four minutes into the second half on a goal by Shelby Lawrence off an assist from Mary Beth Creed.

The Monarchs regained the lead less than three minutes later but the Hens tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Lindsay Boyd.

UD senior Shannon Alger scored the game-winner with just 2:59 left to play, taking a feed from Boyd and slipping the ball past Old Dominion’s goalkeeper.

UD goalkeeper Lindsey Shover had nine saves in the game.

The Hens fell 2-1 to the College of William & Mary on Sunday in Williamsburg. UD scored on an own goal.

Shover again had nine saves.

Following weekend action, UD is 6-4-2 overall and 3-2-0 in the CAA. The Hens will return home for a pair of conference matches this weekend at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. They will play Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14, and James Madison University at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16.
