UD women’s soccer tops Drexel on D’Amico goal

Alli D’Amico
10:04 a.m., Sept. 26, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s soccer team defeated Drexel University 1-0 in double overtime as both teams opened Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

Sophomore Alli D’Amico retrieved a loose ball in front of the Drexel goal and beat goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond for the only goal of the game.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens carried play for much of the game, with 29 shots and 14 corner kicks. Drexel managed 11 shots and two corner kicks.

Bond made 11 saves to keep Drexel in the game, including a diving stop on a shot by UD’s Emily Sammis with only nine minutes remaining in regulation.

UD’s Caitlyn Germain finished with nine shots, four of which were on goal.

Drexel’s best chance came near the end of the first half when Katie Kane’s shot from 10 yards was knocked away on a diving save by UD goalkeeper Lindsey Shover, who finished the game with three saves.

With the victory, UD improved to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the CAA. Drexel saw its five-game unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 5-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Hens will play two CAA games this weekend, traveling to Northeastern University for a game at 6 p.m., Friday, and returning home to face Hofstra University at 1 p.m., Sunday. Northeastern is 3-5-1 with a conference loss to Hofstra, and the Pride is 5-2-1 with a four-game winning streak.
