Women’s soccer team hosts Blue Hen Classic

Caitlyn Germain
11:58 a.m., Sept. 19, 2005--Freshman Caitlyn Germain scored with 3:10 left in the second overtime to lift the University of Delaware women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over the University of Northern Iowa in the Blue Hen Adidas Classic tournament on Friday night at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens fell 2-0 to Georgetown University in a game played Sunday. Georgetown also defeated Towson University 3-0 on Friday, and Towson edged Northern Iowa 1-0 on Sunday.

Against Northern Iowa, UD took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Allison Kendro off an assist from Mary Beth Creed. Northern Iowa tied the game at 1-1 before UD’s Shannon Alger scored on an assist by Germain.

Northern Iowa again bounced back to tie the game 2-2 and send it into overtime.

UD’s Shelby Lawrence set up the game-winning goal on a long pass to Germain, who gathered up the ball on the left sideline and went in alone on goal from 25 yards out, slipping the ball past Northern Iowa goalkeeper Krista Thorley.

The win was the 150th in the career of UD Head Coach Scott Grzenda.

The Hens (3-2-2) will face Drexel University in their first Colonial Athletic Association match of the season at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
