UD women’s soccer team competes in Carolina

11:26 a.m., Sept. 6, 2005--Competing in the weekend’s Summitt Hospitality Invitational, the University of Delaware women’s soccer team tied Elon University 1-1 and fell 2-1 to host North Carolina State University.

Against Elon on Friday, the Fightin’ Blue Hens bounced back from a one-goal deficit at the half on a goal by senior Shelby Lawrence to earn the tie.

UD had several opportunities to win the game in overtime, outshooting Elon 8-3 in the extra periods. Freshman Caitlyn Germain, who led the Hens with seven shots, hit the post with just 21 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

Goalkeepers Lindsey Shover had two saves, and Bonnie Mills had three saves for the Hens.

Against North Carolina State on Sunday, UD (1-1-2) suffered its first loss of the season. Sophomore Alli D’Amico scored for the Hens off an assist from Germain. Goalkeeper Shover had seven saves.

UD will return to action with a game against Temple University at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
