Malcom is named top senior female athlete

Tiara Malcom
9:39 a.m., May 19, 2005--Tiara Malcom, who led the University of Delaware women's basketball team to one its most successful runs in history, has been named the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete for 2004-05.

Malcom, a forward who led the Fightin’ Blue Hens to three postseason tournament appearances and was named the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, was honored during the annual UD Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Awards banquet, held May 18 at Clayton Hall.

The Outstanding Senior Female Athlete Award is selected by a vote of the head coaches of UD’s 12 women's intercollegiate sports. Malcom is the first basketball player to win the award since Megan Dellegrotti in 2002. Swimmer Sara Peffer won the award in 2004 and diver Julie Van Deusen won in 2003.

Malcom was a four-year standout and led the Hens to an overall record of 89-32. During her career, UD won Colonial Athletic Association regular season titles in 2003 and 2005 and berths in the Women's National Invitation Tournament in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

Malcom, a three-time All-CAA selection, served as a captain of the 2004-05 team. In her senior season, she scored 15.5 points per game and grabbed 6.8 rebounds per game.

Malcom set UD records for career free throws made (535, which is also a conference record), games played (121) and games in which she reached double figures in scoring (88). She is fourth in UD history in scoring (1,545 points), fifth in blocked shots (109) and ninth in rebounding (794).

Malcom also was named the winner of the basketball team’s UD Alumni Association Award as most valuable player for the second consecutive season.

A family and community services major, Malcom was a two-time CAA Dean Ehlers Award candidate for her overall contributions on the court, in the classroom and in the community. She overcame a partial hearing loss in both ears to star for the Hens.

In addition to Malcom, the following UD scholar-athletes were honored as the outstanding performers on their teams as voted by their teammates:

Cross country

Freshman Colleen O'Brien won the UD Alumni Association Award. She was the top finisher for the Hens in each of the last six meets of the season and finished fourth at the CAA championship meet. She led the team with a seventh-place finish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships and a 34th-place finish at the NCAA regional meet. O’Brien was named to the All-CAA team.

Field hockey

Sophomore midfielder Amanda Warrington won the UD Alumni Association Award. She played an important role in helping lead the Hens to one of their finest seasons ever, as UD went 15-7, won its first CAA championship and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament for the first time since 1986. Warrington scored 10 goals and had four assists and was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year. She was selected first team All-CAA, first team All-ECAC, first team All-Mid Atlantic and second team All-American.
