UD women’s lacrosse plays in CAA tourney

10:42 a.m., April 29, 2005--The Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse championships will be held Saturday and Sunday at James M. Shuart Stadium on Hofstra University’s south campus in Hempstead, N.Y. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Division I tournament.

No entrant in this year’s field has won a CAA title. The semifinal games on Saturday will feature the No. 1 seed Hofstra against the No. 4 University of Delaware at noon and the No. 2 seed Towson University against the No. 3 seed George Mason University at 2:30 p.m.

The championship game will be played at 1 p.m., Sunday.

Tickets cost $6 for adults and $3 for students and children. Admission for college students with identification is free. Call the Hofstra Arena box office at (516) 463-6633, ext. 1, for additional information.

Hofstra secured the top seed and right to host the conference tournament with a record of 13-3 overall and 6-1 in the CAA. Leading the Pride is junior midfielder Becky Thorn, who is averaging 2.25 goals per game, and senior defender Bridget Eder, the reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Year.

UD, which is coached by first year Head Coach Kim Ciarrocca, is 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the CAA. The Fightin’ Blue Hens are making their first postseason appearance since 2001.

UD senior Becky Rausa is averaging 2.64 points per game, senior Erin Edell has scored 25 goals and recorded five assists to go along with a team leading 41 ground balls, and freshman Casey McCrudden has scored a team-high 28 goals.

Hofstra defeated the Hens 11-9 on April 3 at Rullo Stadium, coming back from a one-goal deficit at the half.
