UD women’s lacrosse clinches CAA berth

UD’s Casey McCrudden
9:54 a.m., April 18, 2005--With a pair of weekend victories, the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team has clinched its first appearance in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament.

UD, which is led by first-year Head Coach Kim Ciarrocca, last competed in the postseason in 2001, when it was a member of the America East Conference.

The CAA tournament will be held at the home of the top seed, Hofstra University, with the semifinals on Saturday, April 30, and the championship game on Sunday, May 1.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will meet Hofstra in one semifinal with second seeded Towson University facing George Mason University in the other semifinal. Earlier this season, Hofstra defeated the Hens 11-9.

UD earned the tournament berth with a 15-3 victory over Old Dominion University on Friday and a 13-8 upset victory over the College of William and Mary, which entered the game ranked No. 15 in the nation, on Sunday. Both games were played at Rullo Stadium.

In the victory over Old Dominion, UD freshman attack Casey McCrudden had four goals, and both Becky Rausa and Kristin Cellucci had three goals apiece. Cellucci added two assists, and Rausa had one.

Also scoring for the Hens were Erin Edell, with two goals, and Katie Muth, Laura Libertini and Katy Kirby, with one each.

UD goalkeeper Patrice Hughes had eight saves.

Against William and Mary, McCrudden, Rausa, Cellucci, Laura Miller and Stephanie McQuade had two goals each. Hughes had seven saves.

UD has now won three of its last four games and is 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the CAA. The Hens next will face Temple University, where Ciarrocca was head coach before coming to UD, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 20, at Rullo Stadium.
