UD women’s basketball announces awards

Tiara Malcom
9:20 a.m., April 22, 2005--The University of Delaware women's basketball team, coming off one of the finest seasons in Fightin’ Blue Hens history, gathered on Thursday night in the Bob Carpenter Club for its end of season awards ceremony.

The Hens, under Head Coach Tina Martin, finished the season 25-6 and with the second most wins in UD history. They tied the school record for consecutive victories with 17 and snapped Old Dominion University's 122-game home win streak against Colonial Athletic Association opponents.

UD won the CAA regular season title and advanced to the tournament championship game, in which they fell to Old Dominion in overtime. For the third time in the last four seasons, the Hens appeared in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

Senior Tiara Malcom was honored as the Hens’ Most Valuable Player for the second straight year. Malcom led the team in scoring, with 16.4 points per game, and in rebounding, with 6.7 rebounds per game, and was named the CAA Player of the Year.

The UD Coaches Award went to sophomore Alena Koshansky and junior Karleena Tobin. Koshansky hit a team-high 41 three-pointers this year and had 79 assists and 65 steals. Tobin appeared in 11 games this year and made her presence felt both in practice and during the games.

Sophomore Tyresa Smith was presented the Outstanding Defensive Player Award, having set the school record for steals in a season with 100. Smith earlier had been named to the CAA All-Defensive Team. She had 100 assists and 11 blocked shots, and averaged 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

The Most Improved Player Award went to senior forward Tiffany Young, who averaged 11.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Young was named to the CAA All-Tournament team and had 23 points in the championship game.

Senior Julie Sailer was honored as the 20th player in the history of UD women’s basketball to score 1,000 points, and was presented with the ball used when she achieved that distinction during the WNIT game against St. John’s University.
