UD was left out of the NCAA Division I championship tournament after falling 78-74 in overtime to Old Dominion University in the Colonial Athletic Association title game on Saturday. The Hens had beaten Old Dominion in two regular season meetings.

UD is in good company, as several other strong teams were overlooked by the NCAA committee and will be vying for the WNIT title, among them 27-3 Gonzaga University, 19-11 Villanova University and the University of Iowa, which went 20-9 in the highly competitive Big 10 Conference.

St. John’s is a member of the Big East Conference and finished the season 19-10. Kia Wright, a 5-foot, 8-inch sophomore guard who is averaging 14.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, leads the Red Storm. Wright also has 102 assists and 62 steals.

Angela Clark, a 6-1 sophomore forward, is averaging 11.6 points per game and leads St. John’s with 8.4 rebounds per game. Tara Walker, a 5-9 junior guard, is averaging 10 points per game.

The teams have three common opponents. St. John’s defeated both Hofstra University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington in early season action, and lost twice to Georgetown University in Big East play. The Hens lost to Georgetown early in the season, and twice defeated both Hofstra and UNC Wilmington.

UD is led by CAA Player of the Year Tiara Malcom and Tiffany Young, both senior forwards.

The winner of Thursday’s game will meet the winner of the contest between the University of Maine and West Virginia University, which will be played Friday. Second-round sites will be determined after the first-round games.

On the other side of UD’s bracket are the University of North Carolina Charlotte, Wake Forest University, the University of Florida and the University of South Florida.
