UD volleyball team is picked 2nd in CAA

11:44 a.m., Aug. 11, 2005--The University of Delaware volleyball team has been picked to finish a close second in the Colonial Athletic Association in a preseason poll based on the votes of the conference’s head coaches.

The coaches predict an extremely tight race at the top, with Hofstra University the preseason favorite followed closely by Head Coach Bonnie Kenny’s Fightin’ Blue Hens and CAA newcomer Northeastern University.

Hofstra received 70 total points and four first-place votes, and UD received 67 points and three first-place votes. Northeastern received 63 points and two first-place votes, and defending CAA champion Towson University received 47 points.

Hofstra returns four starters from last year’s 19-10 team that reached the CAA championship tournament semifinals. Leading the Pride will be first-team All-CAA selection Tessa Sphar and sophomore setter Shellane Ogoshi, the CAA Rookie of the Year.

UD went 23-9 overall last season and reached the CAA championship game for the first time. The Hens return four starters, including senior middle hitter Niecy Taylor and a pair of CAA All-Rookie honorees in setter Allison Lutz and opposite hitter Colleen Walsh.

Northeastern finished second in the America East Conference and Towson has gone 27-1 in CAA regular-season play over the past two seasons.

UD will open the season by serving as host of the Delaware Invitational to be played Aug. 26-27. Participating teams include the University of San Francisco, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Pittsburgh.
