UD Hall of Famer Viera earns McKenzie Award

Barbara Viera
8:43 a.m., June 13, 2005--Former University of Delaware women's volleyball head coach Barbara L. Viera was presented the R. Tait McKenzie Award by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, during the organization’s annual convention in April in Chicago.

The award is bestowed annually by the alliance in recognition of distinguished service by members, and Viera was hailed by the organization as “one of the select few who have the vision, the energy, the dedication and the where-with-all to excel on numerous fronts--teaching, coaching, local, district, national, international and, most importantly, as a person.”

"She is responsible for tremendous steps forward in athletics, fitness and healthy lifestyles for women and is truly deserving of the R. Tait McKenzie Award," an alliance press release said.

Viera, who spent 27 years as head volleyball coach and a faculty member at UD before her retirement after the 1999 season, is a member of both the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame and the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame.
