Blue Hen volleyball loses pair in CAA

2:47 p.m., Oct. 24, 2005--The University of Delaware volleyball team lost two hard-fought Colonial Athletic Association matches this weekend, falling 3-2 to both Virginia Commonwealth University and the College of William & Mary. Both matches were played on Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens fell 3-2 to Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, losing the first game 31-29 then coming back to win the next two 30-18 and 33-31. However, the Rams regrouped and won out, 30-26 and 15-11.

UD junior Heather Ranck had a career-high 34 digs and freshman Kelly Gibson had a team-high 19 kills and posted 17 digs. Sophomore Colleen Walsh had 13 kills and 10 digs and senior Niecy Taylor had 13 kills and a game-high six blocks.

The Hens fell 3-2 to William & Mary on Saturday, dropping the first game 30-26 then battling back to win the next two 30-23 and 30-27 before the Tribe came back to win the last two 30-23 and 15-11.

Gibson led the Hens with 19 kills and 10 digs and Taylor had a career-high 21 kills. Ranck matched her career-high with 31 digs and sophomore Allison Lutz had a career-high 24 digs and posted 58 assists. Senior Megan McGrath had 12 kills, Colleen Walsh had 11 kills and Claire McCormack had 12 digs.

With the losses, the Hens fell to 9-16 overall and 5-8 in the CAA. They will play a non-conference match at Villanova University at 7 p.m., Tuesday, then will return home for a conference match against Towson University at 7 p.m., Saturday.
