Delaware volleyball team wins two CAA matches

10:52 a.m., Oct. 10, 2005--The University of Delaware volleyball team earned two Colonial Athletic Association victories over the weekend, defeating James Madison University 3-2 on Friday in Harrisonburg, Va., and George Mason University 3-0 on Saturday in Fairfax, Va.

With the victories, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 7-13 overall and 4-5 in the CAA.

UD will take on LaSalle University in a non-conference match at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 11, on Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Hens will then take to the road for a pair of CAA matches, at the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14, and at Georgia State University in Atlanta at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16.

In the victory over James Madison, the Hens were led by freshman Kelly Gibson, who had 26 kills and 15 digs. Senior Niecy Taylor had 14 kills and matched her career-high with nine blocks, while sophomore Colleen Walsh had 16 kills and 11 digs.

Sophomore setter Allison Lutz had 52 assists and nine digs, junior Heather Ranck had 14 digs and junior Claire McCormack had 10 digs.

Gibson had another strong game against George Mason, recording 18 kills and eight digs. Ranck had 20 digs and Walsh, who is among the conference leaders in kills and points per game, had 12 kills.

Taylor and senior Megan McGrath had six kills each and McCormack had eight digs.
