Delaware volleyball splits CAA matches

12:04 p.m., Sept. 19, 2005--Sophomore Colleen Walsh had 26 kills to lead the University of Delaware volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over host Virginia Commonwealth University in a Colonial Athletic Association match played Saturday. The victory followed a 3-0 loss to the College of William & Mary on Friday in Williamsburg, Va.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens (4-8 overall and 2-2 in the CAA) will travel to Towson University for a CAA match at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 20.

The Hens then will complete in the Yale Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23-24, in New Haven, Conn. UD will face Yale on Friday and Binghamton University and Iona College on Saturday.

Against Virginia Commonwealth, UD fell 31-29 in the first game and then won 30-23 and 30-27 before falling 30-25. The Hens won the fifth game 15-10 for the match victory.

In addition to her 26 kills, Walsh had 17 digs. UD freshman Kelly Gibson had 12 kills and 12 digs, junior Kristine Gneiss had a career-high seven blocks, and Heather Ranck had a team-high 20 digs.

William & Mary defeated the Hens 30-27, 30-16 and 30-19. Walsh had 16 kills and 11 digs, and Ranck had 21 digs. Megan Welch had a team-high 31 assists.
