Volleyball team drops UNC Wilmington 3-0

11:22 a.m., Sept. 12, 2005--The University of Delaware volleyball team evened its Colonial Athletic Association record at 1-1 with a 3-0 victory over the University of North Carolina Wilmington in a match played Saturday afternoon at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated UNC Wilmington 30-22, 30-28 and 30-28 as sophomore Colleen Walsh recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs.

UD senior Megan McGrath had 12 kills, while freshmen Sue Wiker and Kelly Gibson had nine kills each. Junior Kristine Gneiss made a team-high five blocks, and junior Heather Ranck, who is ranked 29th in NCAA Division I in digs per game (5.24), led the Hens with 17 digs.

The Hens fell 3-1 to CAA newcomer Georgia State University on Friday at Barbara Viera Court. Ranck had 26 digs, and Walsh had 14 kills and 10 digs. Appearing in her first collegiate game, freshman Clar Farwell had 11 kills, and Gibson added nine kills and 10 digs.

UD senior co-captain Niecy Taylor was out of the lineup and will miss four to six weeks with a high-ankle sprain that she suffered last week in practice.

The Hens will return to action at Temple University at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13.
