Blue Hen volleyball to host UMBC tonight

11:15 a.m., Sept. 6, 2005--The University of Delaware volleyball team will play host to the University of Maryland Baltimore County in a match at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens return home after competition in the Spring Hill Suites Invitational at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, where they went 1-2 with a victory over the host team.

UD defeated UNC Charlotte 3-1 after a 3-0 loss to the University of Texas San Antonio and a 3-0 loss to Middle Tennessee State University.

In the victory over UNC Charlotte, UD junior Heather Ranck had 31 digs. Freshman Molly Rand had 19 kills and eight digs, and sophomore Megan Welch had 37 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Colleen Walsh had 12 kills, and Megan McGrath had six blocks.

Against Middle Tennessee, Rand and senior Niecy Taylor had eight kills apiece, while Ranck had nine digs. Welch had 22 assists and seven digs, and Walsh had five kills and six digs.

Against UT San Antonio, Ranck led the Hens with 21 digs, while Walsh and Taylor combined for 17 kills. Welch had 25 assists, and McGrath and Rand each had six kills.

Taylor was named to the All-Tournament team.

After tonight’s game against UMBC, the 2-4 Hens will open Colonial Athletic Association action with a home game against new conference member Georgia State University at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9. UD will remain at home to face the University of North Carolina Wilmington in a second conference match at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10.
