Blue Hen volleyball third in tournament

11:42 a.m., Aug. 30, 2005--The University of Delaware volleyball team opened the season by finishing third in the Asics Delaware Invitational Tournament.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, who last year reached the Colonial Athletic Association championship game, fell 3-0 to the University of Pittsburgh on Friday. The next day, the Hens defeated the University of New Hampshire 3-2, then fell to the University of San Francisco 3-1.

In the loss to Pitt, UD’s Colleen Walsh, an All-CAA Rookie Team selection last year, had 14 kills, and Heather Ranck added a team high 15 digs. Megan Welch led the Hens with 33 assists and was second on the team with 10 digs, while Megan McGrath had eight kills and just one error to hit .538 for the match.

Against New Hampshire, Ranck, who was named to the All-Tournament team, led the Hens with 17 digs. Walsh added a team high 16 kills and five aces, Niecy Taylor had 11 kills and seven blocks, and freshman Kelly Matthias had 12 blocks, fifth most in a match in school history.

Welch had a team high 37 assists and Molly Rand had eight kills.

Against San Franciso, Ranck led the Hens with 24 digs while Taylor had a team high 17 kills. Welch had 26 assists and Allison Lutz had 23. McGrath had 13 kills and Walsh had 11.

UD will return to action Sept. 2-3 with three matches at the Charlotte Invitational in North Carolina.
