Hen volleyball team adds two recruits

9:23 a.m., April 14, 2005--Two additional high school standouts, outside hitter Kelly Gibson of Taos, N.M., and 6-foot 5-inch right side hitter Sue Wiker of Charlotte, N.C., have announced that they will compete for the University of Delaware volleyball team, according to Fightin’ Blue Hens Head Coach Bonnie Kenny.

Kenny earlier announced the signing of Molly Rand of Metairie, La., Marissa Shapiro of Toledo, Ohio, Kelly Matthias of Quakertown, Pa., and Clar Farwell of Downers Grove, Ill.

UD went 23-9 last fall and advanced to its first Colonial Athletic Association tournament final before falling to host Towson University in the championship match. The Hens lost four seniors from that squad, including two-time All-CAA middle hitter Valerie Murphy.

Gibson was a standout at Taos High School and also competed for the High Desert Volleyball Club. She earned All-State honors as a senior and was a first team all-district selection in both 2003 and 2004. She plans to major in fashion design.

"Kelly is a dynamic and athletic outside hitter," Kenny said. "She will provide immediate depth in our outside hitting position at the net and with her ball control skills. She has the potential to contribute as a freshman."

Wiker was a standout at South Mecklenburg High School and also competed for the Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club. She capped a three-year varsity career in volleyball by earning all-conference honors as a senior and also was a four-year varsity performer for the school's basketball team, which went 25-5 in 2004-05, as she set a county record for blocked shots in a game with 16. She plans to major in English.

"Sue is a young volleyball player who will take some time to develop," Kenny said. "She is working hard already to prepare for the game at this level. Her ceiling for development is high, and we believe that she can become a very good collegiate volleyball player."
