Texas Rangers select UD catcher Valichka

9:43 a.m., June 9, 2005--The Texas Rangers selected University of Delaware junior catcher Brian Valichka in the 19th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Wednesday afternoon.

Valichka appeared in 55 games for the Fightin’ Blue Hens this season, batting .280 and ranking among the team leaders with 58 hits, 33 runs scored, 16 doubles, six home runs and 28 runs batted in.

He shared Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year honors, recording a .991 fielding percentage. The 2005 Johnny Bench Award candidate also picked eight runners off base and threw out 21 runners attempting to steal.

Another former Hen, outfielder Kevin Mench, is on the Rangers’ major league roster.
