Blue Hen track teams win invitational meet

11:18 a.m., May 9, 2005--The University of Delaware men’s and women’s teams won the team titles at the Delaware Invitational track and field meet, held Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. The UD men’s team was led by Mike Yost, who won the discus and the hammer throws, and the women’s team was led by Brittany Wright, who won the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

In the men’s competition, the Fightin’ Blue Hens scored 288.5 points to lead Delaware State University (134.5) and Coppin State University (17). In the women’s competition, the Hens scored 289 points to lead Towson University (269) and Coppin State (32). Wheaton College won the six-team Division II/III men's competition with 109 points, while Millersville University took the Division II/III women's competition with 168 points.

In addition to UD victories by Yost, Mike Hazeltine won the 1500-meter run, P.J. Meany the 3000-meter run, Mike Ward the 5000-meter run, Jay Bradley the 110-meter hurdles, Brad Dodson the 3000-meter steeplechase and Matt Guida the pole vault. Also, UD’s 4x400 meter relay team won its event.

Second-place performances were turned in by Scott Vari in the 200 meters, Dodson in the 800 meters, Clark Ridge in the 1500 meters, Kyle Schmid in the 3000 meters, Bradley in the 400-meter hurdles, Tyler Mayforth in the 3000-meter steeplechase, Will Baum in the high jump, Matt Arbaugh in the pole vault, Yost in the shot put, Kyle Casella in the hammer throw and Adam Cianfichi in the javelin throw.

In addition to UD victories by Wright, Mary Martini won the 5000 meters, Kate Klim the 3000-meter steeplechase, Rachel Young the shot put, Lisa Weeks the discus and Lauren Palmer the hammer throw. UD’s 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams also won.

Finishing second for the Hens were Kristen Frustillo in the 100 meters, Rayna Horsey in the 200 meters, Megan Oberst in the 400 meters, Toni Riggi in the 800 meters, Leslie Wason in the 5000 meters, Colleen Reid in the 3000-meter steeplechase, Casey Bennett in the pole vault, Weeks in the shot put and Julie Hischmann in the javelin throw.

Both UD teams will return to action May 12-15 when they compete in the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes in America (IC4A) Championships at Princeton University.
